This
is the story of my sabbatical year travels - Europe, Nepal,
Thailand, Laos, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, the US Southwest
and the coast of California.
The
website has three major travel sections: Europe,
Asia and US travels. There are also several pages dealing
with the trip preparation and logistics, detailing how I
did it. I learned a lot about travel in my pre-trip research
and throughout the actual trip. These pre-trip sections
present some of what I learned and how I used that knowledge.
Originally,
I had planned to take 7 - 8 months for my around-the-world
journey but weather and drums of war caused me to shorten
the trip to 6 months. I also knew that if I came back early
enough I could take that long hiking and backpacking trip
to the US southwest in the springtime that I've always wanted
to do - when it is still cool enough.
Most
of the actual trip descriptions are email logs I sent to
a list of friends. Initially, I planned to keep a handwritten
journal for the around-the-world journey, but internet access
was so plentiful and cheap on the trip that I used the internet,
knowing that I could evenually use the email text to create
this website for my friends and students.
I
did not take a camera on my travels, but special thanks
to the many people whogave me permission
to use their web pictures. I was able to populate most travel
pages with images that will appear when you move your mouse
over the
icon. Addtionally, clicking on the icon will open up the
original source page in a new window (often bigger images).
